BPW'S TECHNICAL TIPS NO. 4 - TRACTOR TRAILER BRAKING IMBALANCE

Tractor/trailer braking imbalance (compatibility) is as much a nuisance today as it was in the days prior to EBS being standard on towing and towed vehicles.

This can cause problems ranging from under-utilisation on the trailer brakes, which usually shows up at MOT time with underperforming brakes, or as trailer over-braking which will cause rapid wear on brake friction surfaces.

The cause may be alleviated by adjustment of the trailer braking parameters, but in many cases, the operator will need to enlist the cooperation of the tractor manufacturer so that adjustments may be made to the tractor EBS system. If the trailer is equipped with BPW axles and standard BPW friction surfaces, then our Technical Services team will be able to give advice in these situations, call 0044 116 2816100 (option 4).
